What this solves
Greek ferries strike, on average, 3–6 days per year nationally. Strikes cluster in autumn/winter (Sept–Feb) and around political action days (Labour Day, political anniversaries). The 24-hour notice rule means a strike is announced the day before, but most travellers don't check the operator's site until they arrive at the port. This calculator outputs the historical rate, the recommended buffer days for your itinerary, and what to do if you arrive and there's a strike (Panagiotis Tsantes / HNANE notice — usually posted 24h in advance on operator websites).
Calculator
How to read the result
The calculator outputs three things: (a) the historical strike rate for your month/route combination from the 2021–2025 record (e.g. "5 strike days per year in October for Dodecanese routes"), (b) the recommended buffer days to add to your itinerary to absorb a strike, and (c) the insurance recommendation. The buffer days matter because a strike lasts 24h–72h and the next sailing is usually fully subscribed.
The "this is not a prediction" note is critical. The calculator outputs historical rates, not forecasts. A strike on your specific day cannot be known in advance; the tool helps you plan around the risk, not predict the event. The 24h notice rule is the operational mechanism: Hellenic Coastal Shipping Union (PNO / Panagiotis Tsantes) and the larger union Panhellenic Seamen's Federation (HNANE) publish strike notices 24h in advance on the operator's website and at the port.
Limitations
- The calculator is a historical reference, not a forecast. Specific strike notices cannot be predicted; verify on the operator's site in the 24h before departure.
- Strike rates vary year to year. The 2021–2025 record averaged 3–6 strike days/year nationally, but a single year can have 12 strike days and another 1.
- The route categories are coarse. Within Cyclades, the high-traffic routes (Piraeus–Mykonos–Santorini) have more frequent alternative operators than remote Dodecanese.
- Weather-related cancellations (wind, storms) are NOT counted as "strikes" in the historical data but are an additional disruption source. Off-season (Nov–Mar) weather cancellations are more frequent than strikes.
FAQ
What's the actual strike rate per year?
Average 3–6 strike days/year nationally for the 2021–2025 record. Strikes cluster in October–November (3 strikes/year cluster 2020–2024) and around Labour Day (May 1) and political anniversaries. Peak summer (July–August) has fewer strikes — political cost is higher, and the union knows it.
What happens if I arrive at the port and there's a strike?
Check the operator's site and the port's notice board. Strikes are announced 24h in advance — you'll see it before you leave the hotel. If the strike is in progress, your booking is refunded or moved to the next sailing. KTEL intercity buses sometimes add capacity on the same route but seats sell out fast. Plan a buffer day in your itinerary if Meteora is non-negotiable.
Does travel insurance cover ferry strikes?
It depends on the policy. Most standard policies cover flight disruptions but not ferry strikes unless the policy has specific "transport strike" coverage. The premium tier (e.g. World Nomads Explorer, SafetyWing Nomad) covers ferry strikes. Read the policy wording before buying.
Should I avoid October and November entirely?
No — October is one of the best months to visit Greece (warm water, fewer crowds, lower prices). The strike risk is real but the buffer-day planning handles it. November is the worst combination: highest strike risk + weather cancellations + reduced schedules. Plan accordingly.
