What this solves
Booking.com says "from €25/day". The actual small manual on Santorini in peak week is €60–90/day, Mykonos is worse, and Crete depends on which end of the island. Add the only useful insurance tier, the booking window that separates "small car" from "small Jeep at triple the rate", and the license trap (US license alone is fine for a rental but technically risky without an IDP — see below). This calculator outputs the realistic number you'll be quoted on the counter.
Calculator
How to read the result
The calculator shows three numbers: the small-manual per-day rate (what a Fiat Panda or Hyundai i10 quotes at), the realistic insurance add-on (CDW alone vs full insurance with zero excess), and the booking window you'd need in 2026 to actually get that small car — versus the alternative (a Jeep Compass or Suzuki Jimny at 1.8–2.0× the rate). Use the insurance recommendation, not the cheapest one at the counter, if you cannot afford to lose a €800 excess on a goat scratch in rural Crete.
License note: EU licenses are accepted as-is in Greece. Non-EU drivers (including US, Canada, Australia) are strongly to bring an IDP (International Driving Permit). US licenses are technically valid standalone, but Greek rental desks routinely reject them or warn about insurance voiding without an IDP. Don't argue at the counter — get the IDP at home before flying.
Limitations
- Rates shown are reference values for 2025–2026 from aggregator spot-checks (AutoEurope, DiscoverCars, local operator sites). Counter quotes for July–August 2026 may exceed the upper end if demand spikes.
- "Small manual" assumes the cheapest non-automatic category. If you book an automatic, expect 1.5–2.5× the rates shown. Greek islands have very few automatics.
- The booking-window flag assumes you actually need a small car. If you want a Jeep anyway, you can usually book 2–4 weeks ahead even in August.
- Ferry fees for taking the car to another island are NOT included — add roughly €25–60 one-way for Cyclades inter-island, €70–120 for long-haul routes.
FAQ
Why is Mykonos so expensive?
Two reasons: a tiny rental fleet (the island is small) and a clientele that pays whatever the price is. The same Fiat Panda that costs €30/day in Athens is €80–120/day on Mykonos in July. Consider not renting at all — the island is small enough that tours cover it.
Is CDW enough insurance?
CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) at €15–25/day has a deductible, typically €600–900. The damage you cause to the rental car is covered above that, but you'll put down the deductible on your card. Full insurance (€25–40/day) reduces the deductible to €0–200. If you scratch a car in a tight village alley, full insurance is the difference between a €700 surprise and a coffee.
My credit card claims it covers rentals — do I still need the counter insurance?
Usually yes. Greek rental contracts frequently exclude certain claim types that your card covers (tires, glass, undercarriage, sand-blasted paint from beach driving). Read the fine print or pay the full-insurance tier. The €15/day difference is rarely worth a €600 surprise.
How early should I book for August?
For a small manual in peak August: book in February or earlier. By May, only automatics and Jeeps remain on Santorini and Mykonos. For Crete (Heraklion/Chania), you can usually get away with 3–4 weeks ahead even in August because the fleet is large.

About this tool
Built because the headline "from €25/day" rental price on every booking site has nothing to do with what you'll actually pay on a small island in peak season. Reference values for 2025–2026, cross-checked against three aggregators and direct counter quotes. This is not a booking site; no affiliate links here.
