What this solves
"Should I hike Samaria" depends on more than enthusiasm. It's 5–7 hours, mostly downhill but the rocky riverbed at the bottom destroys knees even for fit hikers. The gorge is a heat trap in July/August and can flood in spring rains. Closed Nov–Mar. This tool outputs a Go / Skip / Plan Carefully verdict and the realistic total cost (entry, shuttle, return ferry, return bus).

How to read the result
The output is a Go / Skip / Plan Carefully verdict and a full cost breakdown. The May/Sep window is the right one — not July/August, when the gorge is 30°C+ in the canyon. The ferry back from Agia Roumeli is non-negotiable; you can't walk out of the gorge. Plan to start before 7am (park opens 6am, shuttle from Chania leaves early).
Limitations
- Samaria is closed Nov–Mar (sometimes also closed for a few days after heavy rain in spring). Verify status on the OAKSM (Forest Directorate) site before going.
- The gorge floor is exposed to sun for most of the day. Heat illness is the #1 risk — bring 2L water minimum, sun hat, electrolytes.
- Last 3km is a rocky riverbed — wet rocks, ankle-turning stones, and the only shade is at the river. Even fit hikers take 60–90 minutes for this section.
- Wild goats (kri-kri) are protected — stay on the path, don't chase, don't feed.
FAQ
Can I do it in one direction and not return?
Yes — that's how everyone does it. The gorge is one-way: enter at Xyloskalo (top), exit at Agia Roumeli (sea). You take the ferry from Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakion (or Sougia), then a bus back to Chania. Returning on foot is not permitted.
How fit do I really need to be?
It's mostly downhill (1200m descent), so cardiovascular demand is moderate. The harder sections are the rocky riverbed (ankles) and the 1km climb out to Xyloskalo if you reverse-hike. Most people in average shape finish in 5–6 hours. Children 6+ do it regularly with families.
What if it rains heavily?
Flash floods in the gorge are dangerous. The gorge is closed when river flow is high — typically 24–48 hours after major rain. Spring (April/May) is most prone. Check OAKSM status the morning of.
Should I bring hiking poles?
Yes — strongly recommended. The descent is hard on knees, and the riverbed at the bottom is uneven. Telescoping poles fit in a backpack for the ferry ride. Most experienced Samaria hikers use them.

About this tool
Built because half the people who start Samaria in July regret it by the bottom — the heat is brutal. We model month + fitness + knees + start city to give a Go / Skip / Plan-Carefully verdict with the real cost. Reference data for 2025–2026.
