Island Peak vs Shoulder vs Winter

Pick your island and what matters most — price, crowds, swimming, ferry reliability, nightlife — and we'll show which months of the year actually fit. Not a vague "go in May" article.

What this solves

The standard Greek island advice is "May or September" — but that is meaningless if you specifically want to swim, or if your only available window is in July and you need to know what July actually costs. This calculator compares all 12 months against the constraint you pick, not the constraint you wish you had.

Calculator

How to read the result

The output is a per-month verdict for your chosen island and priority. A "good fit" doesn't mean "perfect" — it means this month doesn't fight your priority. Use it to narrow your dates, then re-run with a secondary priority to see trade-offs (e.g. the cheapest months are also the ones where ferries run half-schedule).

FAQ

Why is the shoulder narrower than I expected?

The "true" shoulder — when ferries are full schedule, the sea is warm, prices are below peak — is May (mid to late), early June, and Sep to mid-Oct. Late June and early September blur into peak pricing on Santorini and Mykonos.

Can I swim in May?

Sea surface temperature in the Aegean typically crosses 22°C in early June and stays above until late October. May averages 19–20°C — wadeable but not comfortable for most adults.

Do ferries actually cancel in winter?

They don't cancel — they thin. Routes like Piraeus–Santorini run daily in August, 3–4 times a week in shoulder, and sometimes only twice a week in January. Smaller islands can be cut off for 3+ days during southerly gales.

Is Crete different from the Cyclades?

Yes. Crete is large enough that even in winter Heraklion has regular ferry service, and south-coast beaches stay swimmable into November. The wind profile is also different — Crete is more sheltered from the Meltemi.

About this tool

Island Peak vs Shoulder vs Winter was built because "go in shoulder season" is useless without defining shoulder. We use published ferry frequencies and 10-year Meltemi averages to score each month against your priority. We do not sell accommodation — this is a planning aid only.
